I
scrolled down my playlist repeatedly hoping to get a song that would keep my
mind away.
“Are these girls going to take forever?” I started feeling very
jaded, was already getting impatient.
Walked
down the hallway hoping to see them in sight. “Really are they gonna keep me
here standing for hours?” I moved down the department
lobby. …yeah, there was my most adored class governor,
he could be annoying sometimes though.
“what are you still doing here April?” steve asked
“waiting for
Tolu and Bimbo”
“ok… you should probably call
them to hurry up, Mr sholanke’s class has started. Room
223, Block 5” steve tried explaining walking really fast.
“social sciences?! …but why does he have to go
that far?” Steve had long walked away with his very long
legs.
“Oh! He probably wants the A.C.-that explains
it, the gen around here is not working… arghhh how I hate this man!” I grunted hoping to see Tolu…
Clinging
to my phone like my whole life depended on it.
“Hello… your face looks familiar” I looked up from my phone to
see the amateur trying to start up a conversation.
“Quite well …just the other way round” I gave him a cold shoulder,
moved my eyeballs in an oscillatory motion, thinking that’s gonna make him swerve.
“Oh that’s good, you seem to know me
but I don’t…. do you mind telling me your
name?” He dug out his phone from his pocket and then
started swinging it. Just what I was expecting…
“Yinka!!! … is it not you? Are you back
from your jail term, or your suspension had been thought over?” I shrieked, hoping I hadn’t called for unnecessary
attention. I ran my hand over my hair , and then rest my back on the wall.
“Oh! Never knew you know all that too,” his expression? Too shocked
to react..
I
shook my head in response. Really I just got myself one more enemy.
“ I should leave now… later then.” He walked quickly away from
me.
What
have I done? Maybe that’s my own little way of
seeking solitude.
-----------------
“Guy, how far?” Yinka greeted the boys,
shaking hands with them in turns.
“wetin you dey follow that babe yearn?” Tade asked, anxious of Yinka’s response.
“I be wan ask her for something jare…. The girl kon dey shout like
that.. tchewww” he brushed his hands over his head cleaning
off the sweat on his face.
“shey u no know the babe? …. Na April be that now?” Lolu tried explaining,
pointing in her direction.
“...which April? Same April, David’s babe? …The girl done extra fine o!
gan.. I no know sha. I think say na all this jambites nao.”
“jambite kehr? …. You no look am well ni? U
high before you comot for house?” Taiwo teased tucking his
handout in his pocket.
“ Guys I dey leave jare, I dey track down HOD he
wan help me sign some papers.” Yinka tried to explain.
“Na so o! Welcome back bro…” Tade congratulated him,
giving him a side hug and a tap on his back.
“…to the hood… na to dey do gently remain
nao o” Lolu advised
“abi nao, guy! We go they jam for area…” Yinka said, adjusting his
sling bag and gazing at himself on the reflected side of the window as he
walked away.
--------------------
“Hello… been trying to call you now,
where are you girls?”
“Ok” I dropped the call giving
the longest hiss...
They
were both stuck in traffic, far away from school “…and you think I’m gonna wait for that?”
I
didn’t want to miss Mr Sholanke’s class, ’cos attendance matters a lot.
I
walked sluggishly hoping Mr Sholanke would be in his best state of mind. That
is demanding and voracious appetite for information sef, he just doesn’t mind his business.
I
got to the hall safely but everything kept me from getting inside. I felt gaunt
while my mates kept tipping me to try the next door.
At
last! the last one gave way. I took the first step in and I landed in front of
the class.
Everyone’s eye was on me...” really is that the worst you
guys can do?” I took the second step, and just as I was
walking through to get a seat in the crowd.
“Young lady… come back here!” Mr Sholanke shrieked from
the podium.
“…. And where are you coming from?” he asked taking his seat,
maybe he was ready to start the insult already.
I
tried moving closer, hoping to think I would get something to say.
“I…I…” I was too unprepared to give
him a reply, why didn’t I ever think of an excuse
on my way here? Where are all those ideas?
“She’s coming from the health
centre…” someone answered from the crowd.
I
turned to look at the wonderful fellow who I might probably beg for the note I
missed…. ‘’Oh! Steve you’re such a lifesaver,” rang through my head.
“Are you sure?” he questioned.
“Yes sir.” Just when I thought the
siege was over, he pointed his meter rule just so close to my mammary gland... ‘Hello?’
“….and what’s that dangling over there?”
I
tilted my neck in shock... “What!” My bra strap went off its
hook? Really I almost melted.
I
tucked it in quickly; almost fainting. I couldn’t have been more embarrassed.
The student snickered behind me ‘’...really? And we are
coursemates o?”
“… next time, don’t come late to my class,” he said, like that was my
punishment for getting to his class late.
He
turned back to the board while I find my way in the crowd.
I
walked straight to the back staring at the sitting faces, like I wasn’t moved by my short drama. ‘’I’m gonna kill Bimbo when I lay
my hands on her’’
I
sent her a text notify her she’s no longer welcomed in the
class... No. 1 step to avoid embarrassments. I trust her she wouldn’t dare…
------------
“Babes, that’s what happened today mehn… no greater embarrassment…am giving that bra a send-off…” I pounced on Sheila’s bed after explaining my
ordeal to Lola and Sheila. They kept laughing... making me want to beat up Tolu
and Bimbo the next time I see them.
“ …and you didn’t ask him what took his eyes
there?” Lola teased rolling over Sheila.
“Ha! No o, not until we get home and
he starts acting all unadulterated, he’s my uncle’s friend, bet u know that….really? You guys
are not nice.” The girls kept
scooping the plate of ice cream lying in front of them, while I wondered why I
wasn't.
“Yinka is back,” I snapped. They kept on with their activities non-challantly.
“Sheila, Yinka is back! …..and I saw him today” I got the
attention I wanted.
“Which yinka?” she dropped her spoon for the first time since she picked it up.
“What is he doing back in school?” she jumped up from her sit
and then ran outside.
“You shouldn’t have told her,” Lola scolded as
she jumped up from her seat.
“Well.. she would later find out…” April replied feeling like a retard.
“What am I going to do now?!” Lola asked… grabbing a scarf to cover
her scattered hair.
"We run after her… what are we
waiting for?" April answered. On taking her first step, she hit her leg on
the remaining scoop of ice cream lying on the floor. “This is not the time to clean up spilt ice cream” I said, as I moved very fast behind Lola.
